Main Story:

A Historic First for Kenya

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has confirmed that Kenya will host the 2026 FIFA Women’s Series matches, marking the country’s first time staging a global football event under FIFA.

The announcement, made on March 24, 2026, positions Kenya as an emerging hub for international sports and reflects growing trust from global football bodies.

International Teams Set to Grace Nairobi

The tournament will bring together teams from India, Australia, and Malawi, with matches scheduled to take place at the iconic Nyayo National Stadium on April 11 and April 15.

Kenya is expected to welcome players, officials, and fans from across the globe, offering a chance to showcase not just football talent but also the country’s culture and hospitality.

Spotlight on Harambee Starlets

All eyes will be on the national women’s team, the Harambee Starlets, who will carry the nation’s hopes as they compete on home turf.

The tournament presents a valuable opportunity for local players to gain international exposure and test their skills against top-tier opposition.

Building Kenya’s Global Sports Reputation

Mvurya noted that Kenya’s selection is a strong endorsement of its ability to host world-class events. The country has previously staged major competitions such as the African Nations Championship, the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, the Magical Kenya Open, the Kip Keino Classic, and the Safari Rally.

These events have helped build confidence in Kenya’s organisational capacity on the global stage.

Preparing for Bigger Stages

Beyond the immediate excitement, the tournament will serve as a test run for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2027, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

The government is already investing heavily in sports infrastructure, including upgrades to Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, as well as the development of the Raila Odinga International Stadium at the Talanta Sports Complex.

Harambee Stars Also in Action

Meanwhile, the men’s national team, the Harambee Stars, are currently in Kigali participating in FIFA Series matches, part of efforts to build squad cohesion and improve performance ahead of future competitions.
