Body Found Days After Disappearance
Residents of Mumbu and Rogoi villages in Murinduko Ward, Mwea East Sub-County, are seeking answers after the body of Isaac Gicobi was found in an abandoned quarry several days after he went missing.
Gicobi, 33, had reportedly disappeared on Saturday night. His body was discovered on Tuesday afternoon inside a water-filled pit located roughly three kilometres from his home and about two kilometres from Mumbu village, near the Piai-Ngariama tarmac road.
The discovery was reportedly made after children who were fishing in a nearby swamp detected a strong smell coming from the area.
Family Raises Questions Over Death
Gicobi’s relatives said they had spent days searching for him before receiving news that his body had been located.
His brother, John Muthike, said the family was devastated by the discovery and wants authorities to establish exactly what happened to Gicobi.
The family also raised concerns about injuries they observed on the body, with Muthike alleging that Gicobi had suffered significant trauma to the head and appeared to have sustained injuries to his eyes.
Relatives believe these circumstances warrant a deeper investigation into whether Gicobi died at the quarry or was taken there after his death.
Residents Shocked by Discovery
The abandoned quarry was reportedly created several years ago following excavation activities in the area.
Neighbour Jane Muthoni said residents had joined the search for Gicobi after he disappeared, making the discovery particularly distressing.
She said the community is now eager to know who was responsible for his death and how his body ended up at the site.
Gicobi’s colleagues, Simon Ndwiga and Bundi Waweru, also described him as a fellow casual worker and miraa picker. Ndwiga was reportedly overcome with emotion while speaking about the search for their colleague.
Police Begin Investigations
Officers from Itangi Police Station recovered Gicobi’s body from the quarry and transported it to the mortuary.
Investigators are now working to establish the circumstances surrounding his death, including whether he was killed at the quarry or elsewhere before his body was taken there.
The probe is also expected to establish what happened between the time Gicobi was last seen on Saturday night and the discovery of his body on Tuesday.
