Kiprotich Found Safe After Nighttime Incident
Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich has been found safe following an alleged abduction that occurred on Tuesday night.
According to the media organisation, Kiprotich was travelling towards Nakuru when armed men reportedly intercepted him along the Gilgil–Nakuru Road shortly before 9:20 p.m. on September 1, 2026.
He was later found near Masinga Dam approximately nine hours after he was allegedly taken.
The circumstances surrounding his disappearance and how he was located remain subject to investigation.
Standard Group Raises Concerns Over His Work
Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita condemned the incident and questioned whether Kiprotich may have been targeted because of his journalism.
Mwita pointed to the editor’s role in investigative and editorial coverage examining government conduct, arguing that the timing of the incident raises serious questions.
The media organisation has expressed concern that the incident could have been deliberate and connected to Kiprotich’s professional work.

A Second Incident in Just Months
The latest incident comes after another reported attempt to seize Kiprotich in June.
On June 27, armed men travelling in a Toyota Probox allegedly tried to intercept him as he drove to work in Nakuru.
Kiprotich reportedly managed to escape by locking his vehicle and driving away.
The Standard Group says its own internal inquiries later linked the vehicle to the National Police Service’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.
The media house says no individual was held accountable over that earlier incident.
Calls for Accountability
Standard Group has placed strong emphasis on the constitutional protections surrounding freedom of expression and the media.
Mwita said the organisation expects the state to ensure Kiprotich’s safety and called for authorities to establish what happened during both incidents.
The company argues that if investigators eventually establish state involvement, it would raise serious questions about Kenya’s constitutional protections for journalists and freedom of expression under Articles 33 and 34.
Media and Rights Groups Urged to Act
The Standard Group is calling for a transparent and independent investigation into the latest incident as well as the alleged June attempt.
It has also urged relevant oversight and human rights organisations to push for answers and greater protection for journalists working across the country.
Among the bodies mentioned are the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, Law Society of Kenya, Media Council of Kenya and Committee to Protect Journalists.
The organisation also wants concrete guarantees for journalists’ safety, particularly those working on investigations involving powerful institutions.

Kiprotich’s case comes at a time when concerns over the safety of journalists and activists in Kenya continue to generate public debate.
