Main Story

ODM Condemns Violence

ODM has expressed concern over the disruption of daily activities in Homa Bay following violence surrounding a public rally organised by the Linda Mwananchi movement.

The party strongly condemned acts of violence, destruction of property and disruption of citizens’ lives, saying political gatherings should not become spaces for intimidation or confrontation.

According to the statement issued on August 18, the incident resulted in the death of Police Driver Constable Jim Richardson Okundi.

Dozens Reported Injured

ODM said 24 civilians were injured during the incident, with the injuries ranging from cuts and fractures to gunshot wounds.

The party also listed 10 security officers as having sustained injuries. It extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer while wishing those injured a quick recovery.

The statement also expressed sympathy to individuals and businesses whose property was reportedly damaged or destroyed during the unrest.

Party Calls for Independent Investigation

ODM has urged security and investigative agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into what happened before and during the rally.

The party said anyone found responsible for criminal acts should face the law regardless of their political affiliation or position.

At the same time, ODM stressed that innocent members of the public should not be subjected to arbitrary arrests, harassment or collective punishment.

Political Differences Should Remain Peaceful

The party reiterated its position that political competition should be handled through dialogue, persuasion, public engagement and ultimately the ballot.

ODM said neither individuals nor political groups should use the party’s name to justify violence or lawlessness.

The call comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with competing political camps seeking to strengthen their support bases across the country.

Call for Political Restraint

ODM further appealed to political leaders, parties and their supporters to exercise restraint as political activities increase.

The party warned that political competition should not turn into hostility between communities, neighbours or supporters of rival political formations.

The statement said ODM’s vision is for a Kenya where citizens can freely attend political meetings, or choose not to attend them, without fear.

Political competition may shape Kenya’s future, but no contest should come at the cost of lives, safety and the right of citizens to live without fear.
