Main Story

Court Order Triggers Exhumation

Homicide detectives on Wednesday returned to a family compound in Maranda village, Bondo Sub-County, where the remains of James Omollo Ageng’a had been buried.

The operation followed an order from the Bondo Magistrate’s Court dated May 11, 2026. The directive allowed authorities to recover Ageng’a’s remains and subject them to a forensic examination.

The case is linked to proceedings involving the Republic against James Ageng’a, Meshack Ageng’a and others.

Questions Surrounding the Death

Investigators say Ageng’a was laid to rest before a post-mortem examination could be carried out.

With no autopsy conducted at the time, the exact circumstances and cause of his death remained unclear. Concerns that emerged afterwards prompted detectives to seek legal authority to exhume the body and reopen the forensic inquiry.

The latest exercise is therefore expected to provide investigators with evidence that could help establish what happened before Ageng’a’s death.

Forensic Experts Collect Samples

The operation involved homicide investigators, the Regional Criminal Investigations Officer and forensic specialists.

Director of the Homicide Investigations Bureau Martin Nguguto and the Chief Government Pathologist were involved in the exercise, with experts tasked with recovering specimens from the remains.

The Government Chemist also took part, with samples expected to undergo specialised laboratory analysis.

Tests Expected to Shed Light on Death

A detailed post-mortem examination is expected to follow the exhumation.

Among the tests planned are toxicological analysis, DNA profiling and histological examination. The tests could help establish whether there were substances in the deceased’s system, identify biological evidence and reveal changes in body tissues that may assist investigators.

Once the graveside exercise is completed, the remains are expected to be taken to Bondo Sub-County Hospital Mortuary or another facility designated by the Chief Government Pathologist.

Investigators Await Forensic Findings

The results of the examination could become an important part of the ongoing criminal investigation.

Authorities are expected to use the findings alongside other evidence as they work to piece together the circumstances that led to Ageng’a’s death.

For now, investigators are awaiting the forensic results, which could provide answers to questions that remained unresolved after his initial burial.

As forensic experts examine the recovered remains, the findings could finally help answer the question that has lingered since Ageng’a’s burial: what really caused his death?
