Main Story
Strong Offshore Quake Triggers Widespread Panic
Residents across southern Philippines fled homes, schools, and workplaces after a powerful earthquake struck offshore near Mindanao Island on Monday morning.
The tremor, which originated southwest of Maasim in Sarangani province, was felt across several regions, sending thousands of people rushing to open spaces as buildings shook violently.
Landslides and Collapsing Buildings Claim Lives
Emergency officials say many victims lost their lives after structures collapsed or were caught in landslides triggered by the powerful quake.
One of the worst-hit areas was Glan town in Sarangani province, where a massive landslide buried several homes. Rescue workers are also searching for people believed to be trapped beneath debris in General Santos City.
More than 200 people sustained injuries during the disaster and continue receiving medical treatment.
Infrastructure Suffers Heavy Damage
The earthquake disrupted transport and essential services across affected regions, damaging roads, schools, businesses, and other public facilities.
Operations at General Santos International Airport were temporarily halted, while power interruptions and communication outages affected several communities as authorities worked to restore normal services.
Tsunami Alert Lifted After Initial Fears
Officials initially issued tsunami warnings for parts of the Philippines as well as neighboring Indonesia and Malaysia following the powerful offshore earthquake.
Although small tsunami waves were recorded along sections of the coastline, experts later lifted the warnings after determining that the immediate danger had subsided.
Government Mobilizes Emergency Response
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed national disaster response agencies to provide urgent assistance to affected communities and coordinate rescue operations.
Authorities continue assessing the extent of the damage while urging residents to remain cautious due to the possibility of strong aftershocks in the coming days.
