A suspected robbery at an M-Pesa shop in Embu County ended in tragedy after one person lost her life during a dramatic chase along the Embu-Meru Highway.
The suspect was reportedly among a group that allegedly raided an M-Pesa business before escaping in a Probox. Their attempted getaway soon drew the attention of boda boda riders who began pursuing the vehicle.
Ngandori South Location Senior Chief Lincoln Muthee said the suspect initially managed to evade those chasing him and reached Gakwegori, where he reportedly turned around and drove towards Runyenjes.
Woman Killed During Confrontation
The pursuit continued until the vehicle reached the Issako area in Gatunduri, where the boda boda riders reportedly attempted to block its path.
During the confrontation, the Probox allegedly struck a woman who was travelling as a passenger on a motorcycle. She died at the scene.
The motorcycle rider survived but suffered injuries and was taken to hospital for medical attention.
Residents Torch Vehicle
The death sparked anger among residents at the scene. The crowd reportedly surrounded the Probox, overturned it and set it ablaze.
Despite the confrontation, the suspected robber managed to abandon the vehicle and flee on foot before security officers arrived.
Police Launch Investigations
Authorities have since begun investigations into both the alleged M-Pesa robbery and the circumstances surrounding the fatal road incident.
Chief Muthee has urged members of the public not to resort to mob justice, instead calling on residents to report suspected criminals and allow the police and courts to handle such cases.
Police are continuing with efforts to identify and locate the suspect.
The incident is a stark reminder that a pursuit meant to stop suspected criminals can quickly put innocent lives at risk and that justice is safest when left in the hands of the law.
