Family Seeks Justice After Brutal Attack

A family in Gatwikira, Kibra, is calling for urgent action after their relative was allegedly assaulted in an incident believed to be politically motivated.

According to the family, Maureen Matsili, a single mother of four, was attacked on May 18 by an individual known to her following disagreements tied to her vocal support for the Kenya Kwanza administration and the “two-term” slogan.

The incident reportedly happened on a day marked by protests in different parts of the country over rising fuel prices. While demonstrations disrupted transport and led to confrontations in several areas, Kibra remained relatively calm.

However, for Maureen, the day ended in tragedy.

“Mimi naumia kwa sababu ya two term, niko hapa hospitali kwa sababu ya two term,” she painfully stated while receiving treatment.

Victim Sustained Severe Burns

Family members say the suspect allegedly poured hot beans on Maureen, causing extensive burns to several parts of her body.

Her sister, Lilian Kakuli, recounted the horrifying moment, claiming the attacker confronted Maureen over political slogans before carrying out the assault.

The family says the injuries affected her chest, stomach, thighs, and private areas, with doctors reportedly expressing concern over the severity of the burns around her abdomen.

Her brother, Franklin Matsili, urged authorities to ensure justice is served, saying no one deserves such violence over political opinions.

Friends and relatives have also appealed to the government to intervene and address what they describe as growing intolerance and violence linked to political affiliations.

Police Launch Investigations

Authorities confirmed that the matter was reported at Kibra Police Station and investigations are ongoing.

Police spokesperson Patricia Yegon said detectives are handling the case as a suspected hate crime while the victim remains admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Investigators are expected to record statements from witnesses as efforts continue to trace and arrest the suspect.

Rising Concern Over Political Violence

The incident has added to growing fears over politically linked attacks in the country.

Maureen’s assault came shortly after another violent incident in Githurai 45 where a vehicle belonging to Priscilla Njiraini was reportedly set ablaze after attackers allegedly discovered UDA campaign material inside.

Days earlier, gospel singer Rachel Wandeto died after being attacked and set on fire by unknown assailants. Reports suggested the attack may have been connected to a tattoo of President William Ruto.

Police later arrested Josiah Njeru as investigations into the incident continued.

As investigations continue, many Kenyans are now questioning how far political intolerance has gone and whether enough is being done to stop violence before more lives are destroyed.
