Suspicious Movement Raises Alarm

Security officers at Wilson Airport foiled an attempted fuel smuggling operation after noticing unusual activity involving a truck within the airport premises.

The suspects, traveling in a Mitsubishi Canter, allegedly tried to move discreetly among routine airport operations. However, alert officers from the Kenya Airport Police Unit flagged the vehicle before it could exit the facility.

Unauthorized Transport and Missing Clearance

Upon stopping the vehicle, officers discovered irregularities that immediately raised red flags. The individual believed to own the fuel consignment, Gladys Ndumba Kanairo, reportedly lacked a valid gate pass required to access or move goods within the airport.

Further checks revealed that the truck did not have clearance from Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, a mandatory requirement for transporting petroleum products in Kenya.

Fuel Discovery Linked to Aircraft

A search of the vehicle uncovered four drums, each containing 200 litres of jet fuel, bringing the total to 800 litres.

Investigations indicate that the fuel had been drained from an aircraft stationed at a hangar within the airport. The plane, operated by Airworks Aviation, was undergoing maintenance at the time, which authorities believe may have provided cover for the illegal activity.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigations

The suspects, identified as Gladys Ndumba Kanairo, driver Timothy Wambugu Maina, Kennedy Njoka Kinuthia, and Abdulmalik Musinga, were arrested on the spot.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the four are currently being processed as authorities prepare to present them in court. The truck and the recovered fuel have been detained as evidence.
