Laporta Wins by a Wide Margin
Joan Laporta has been re-elected president of FC Barcelona after defeating challenger Victor Font in Sunday’s vote.
About 42 percent of the club’s eligible members took part in the election, representing roughly 48,480 ballots. Laporta dominated the race, receiving 68.18 percent of the vote compared to Font’s 29.78 percent.
Speaking shortly after the results were announced, Laporta expressed gratitude and excitement about the future of the club.
He said the strong mandate from members gives the leadership renewed energy and confidence as they guide Barcelona into the next chapter.
Focus on Camp Nou Project
One of Laporta’s main priorities during his new term will be completing the renovation of the club’s iconic home ground, Camp Nou.
The stadium rebuild is now expected to be finalized in 2027, slightly later than initially planned. The project is seen as a key step in strengthening the club’s finances and global appeal.
Laporta also emphasized the importance of unity among supporters and members as the club continues to defend its interests on the global football stage.
Support from Players and Staff
Earlier in the day, several first-team players visited the voting stations after Barcelona’s impressive 5-2 victory over Sevilla FC.
Head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco were among those who participated in the process.
Other notable members casting their votes included former Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets, midfield star Aitana Bonmatí and former player and coach Xavi Hernández.
Voting stations were set up in several Catalan cities including Girona, Tarragona and Lleida, as well as in Andorra.
Laporta’s Mixed but Impactful Leadership
Laporta previously served as Barcelona president between 2003 and 2010, a period widely regarded as one of the club’s most successful eras.
During that time, Barcelona won the famous treble under coach Pep Guardiola in 2009, while club legend Lionel Messi rose to global superstardom alongside Brazilian icon Ronaldinho.
His second spell has also been eventful. Laporta inherited the club during a major financial crisis and implemented controversial financial strategies, including selling future television rights to fund player signings such as Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.
Under his leadership, Barcelona won the La Liga titles in 2023 and 2025 and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League last season for the first time since 2019.
Laporta also faced criticism for supporting the proposed European Super League alongside Florentino Pérez of Real Madrid CF before the club eventually withdrew from the project earlier this year.
Calls for Voting Reform
After the results, defeated candidate Victor Font acknowledged the outcome but highlighted concerns about low voter turnout.
Font suggested that the election process should evolve to allow members living outside Catalonia to vote remotely, which could increase participation and strengthen the club’s democratic process.
