Main Story

Rescue Operation Launched

Panic gripped parts of Samburu on Wednesday morning after a helicopter went down at Mt Ololokwe, also known as Ol Donyo Sabache.

Witnesses reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from a deep section of the mountain shortly after the aircraft crashed. The steep and rocky terrain has made it difficult for responders to reach the suspected crash site.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that a helicopter had crashed but said investigations were still ongoing as authorities worked to establish what happened.

Difficult Terrain Hampers Response

Locals were among the first to raise the alarm and attempt to respond. However, the location of the crash presented major challenges, with emergency teams struggling to navigate the rugged landscape.

Security personnel and medical responders were subsequently mobilised as efforts to reach the aircraft intensified.

An Air Tropic helicopter was also reported to have arrived in the area to support the rescue operation.

At the time of reporting, police had reportedly not yet reached the exact crash location, while a large column of smoke remained visible from the site.

Occupants Yet to Be Confirmed

Preliminary reports that had not been officially verified suggested that seven people could have been travelling in the helicopter, including six tourists.

Authorities had not, however, confirmed the number of people aboard, their identities or whether there were survivors.

KCAA was yet to provide an official confirmation of fatalities as rescue teams continued working at the scene.

Mt Ololokwe a Popular Tourist Destination

The crash occurred at a mountain that has become increasingly popular with tourists and adventure enthusiasts.

Mt Ololokwe rises dramatically from Samburu’s dry landscape and is known for its distinctive flat-topped profile and expansive views. The destination has also attracted photographers, videographers and visitors seeking outdoor experiences.

As the rescue operation continues, attention remains focused on reaching the crash site and establishing the condition of everyone who was aboard the aircraft.

As rescuers work against difficult terrain and time, the biggest question remains: what happened aboard the helicopter, and will everyone on board be found?
