Below are 7 tips to consider resorting to in case one is confronted by a hyena:

1. Stop; don’t run as a predator; it will instinctively chase animals that run away, and it will do the same to beings.

2. Don’t lie down or pretend to be dead, as this will increase its curiosity.

3. Try not to show your fear; keep yourself calm by talking about it. Apparently, according to the wildlife service officer, hyenas do pay attention and listen.

4. Hyenas are nocturnal, so minimize movements at night.

5. Don’t move until an hyena does, and when you do, continue to face it’s direction.

6. If it growls or giggles, never run away, but don’t move any closer either.

7. Make a loud noise; look aggressive and frightening as if you are going to attack.

Hyenas, or hyaenas, are feliform carnivoran mammals belonging to the family Hyaenidae. With just four extant species, it is the fifth-smallest family in the order Carnivora and one of the smallest in the class Mammalia. While spotted hyenas are the largest species, all hyenas have large heads, powerful jaws, and long front legs. Hyenas are most famous for their “laugh,” depicted in various forms of media.
