Mathare social justice activist Davis Lichuma has been found alive after disappearing for more than three days, easing fears over his whereabouts but raising fresh concerns over alleged enforced disappearances.

Witnesses said Lichuma was discovered outside Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Sunday night. He was reportedly disoriented, believed to have been sedated, and showed signs consistent with physical abuse before being rushed to a Nairobi hospital for treatment.

Disappeared During Gen Z Protest Anniversary

Lichuma went missing on June 25, 2026, while participating in activities marking the second anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z protests.

According to fellow activists, unknown individuals believed to be police officers reportedly picked him up during the demonstrations. His disappearance triggered widespread concern among human rights organizations and civil society groups.

Witnesses Describe Disturbing Condition

One witness who found Lichuma said the activist appeared to have been tortured and was unable to communicate.

“He looked like he was tortured and looked so confused. I tried talking to him, but he could not respond,” the witness said.

Medical personnel are currently attending to him as his condition continues to be monitored.

Civil Society Demands Accountability

Before Lichuma resurfaced, activists and human rights defenders had issued the government with a 24-hour ultimatum to produce him, warning that failure to do so would result in street demonstrations.

Following his recovery, civil society organizations have renewed calls for the National Police Service to take responsibility and provide answers regarding his disappearance and the circumstances surrounding his release.

Several Activists Still Missing

Lichuma is among several activists who were reportedly abducted during the June 25 commemorations.

Five others Frederick Odhiambo, Collins Otieno, Elijah Alam, Michael Ngige and Muteti Mulinge have also resurfaced in recent days, claiming they were tortured before being abandoned in different parts of Nairobi.

However, concerns remain over the whereabouts of several individuals who are still unaccounted for, including Macmillan Kiarie, Abdulaziz Budaand and Michael Oloo.

The National Police Service has maintained that investigations are ongoing and says efforts are underway to account for all reported missing persons.

As investigations continue, Lichuma’s return offers relief to his loved ones while intensifying calls for accountability over the fate of those who remain missing.
