Diplomatic Talks Yield Results
During a joint press briefing in Moscow with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, CS Mudavadi confirmed that Kenya’s diplomatic efforts had secured a halt to recruitment into Russia’s military operations. He assured that all Kenyans currently in Russia would be supported, particularly those requiring hospital visits or other assistance, which will be provided through legal channels.

Numbers on the Ground
The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs estimates that 252 Kenyans had been conscripted into the Special Military Operations, including former members of the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, National Youth Service, and Prisons Service. Of these, 44 have already returned home, 38 are receiving medical care, 10 are missing or deceased, while 160 remain active in the operations.
Prisoners of War
Two Kenyans, Evans Kibet and Macharia Willis Muniu, are being held as prisoners of war in Ukraine. Negotiations are underway to transfer them to Russia, with the aim of eventual repatriation to Kenya.
Reaffirming Bilateral Ties
Beyond consular matters, both leaders emphasized strengthening Kenya-Russia relations, which have lasted over six decades. CS Mudavadi highlighted that Russia was among the first nations to recognize Kenya’s independence and stressed the country’s commitment to deepening diplomatic engagement with Moscow.
As Kenya navigates the complexities of international engagement, the government’s focus remains on safeguarding its citizens while strengthening ties that have stood the test of time.
