NONINI AWARDED 1 MILLION KSH AFTER WINNING COPYRIGHT CASE.

Kenyan Hip hop artist Hubert Mbuku Nakitare famously known as “Nonini” based in the United States has won a copyright case against Influencer Brian Mutinda.

Brian Mutinda had used Nonini’s song without his, the owner’s consent.

Yesterday, the Milimani Court directed the defendant to pay Nonini 1 million for the inconveniences that they may have caused to the artist, as well as drop the content from their platforms.

Nonini’s lawyer hinted that influencers should always consult with the owner of the music before using it for their reasons, be it commercial purposes or something else so that they avoid getting in such situations.

“Intellectual Property is property like any other. The same way you cannot trespass on someone’s land, it is the same way you cannot use someone’s intellectual property without their permission.”

This case started back then in the year 2022 on July when Nonini’s Video “We kamu” was played when Mutinda was promoting a new flat screen TV.

A video that was again played by the company on their Facebook platform. That’s when Nonini reached out to them, asking them to apologize and pull the video down.

The defendants didn’t take the matter serious, which is when Nonini went ahead and filed a lawsuit in court that was reviewed yesterday. Despite the company denying that they never knew that the song was infringed with copyright, they agreed on a figure, which is what Nonini has been awarded.

Nonini has again shared some thread on his Instagram page threatening to go for others and has urged artists to go and claim what’s rightfully theirs.

Nonini is also the founder of P unit and the godfather of gengetone.
