Main Story:
Tragedy Sparks Outrage
The death of young pupil Faiz Faraj at Gilgil Hills Academy has triggered widespread concern after conflicting accounts emerged about what led to his death.
The child reportedly went missing for about three hours before being found unresponsive in a fish pond within the school compound on March 27.
Postmortem Raises Questions
While the school initially indicated that the child had drowned, a postmortem report painted a different picture.
Medical findings showed injuries consistent with a severe head impact, and notably, no water was found in the child’s lungs or digestive system, raising serious doubts about the drowning claim.
Protests and Police Response
The revelations sparked protests across Gilgil, with residents taking to the streets to demand answers.
Demonstrators blocked roads and lit fires, leading to disruption of transport in the town. On the second day of protests, police moved in and used teargas to disperse crowds as tensions escalated.
Leaders Demand Accountability
Area MP Martha Wangari has been vocal in calling for clarity, questioning the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and urging authorities to provide full disclosure.
She criticized the use of force against protesters, insisting that the community has a right to demand accountability.
Local MCA Rose Njoroge echoed these concerns, noting that many parents suspect there may be attempts to conceal the truth.
Investigations Ongoing
Authorities, led by Nakuru County Criminal Investigation Officer Samuel Ngeiywa, say investigations are still underway.
Samples have been forwarded to the Government Chemist for further analysis, including toxicology tests, to determine the exact cause of death.
So far, several individuals, including teachers and a pond attendant, have recorded statements as part of the probe.
Government Steps In
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has confirmed that a full investigation has been launched into the incident.
He described the case as deeply tragic and directed schools across the country to strictly adhere to safety guidelines meant to protect young learners.
