Ammunition Found During Bus Inspection
Police have recovered 48 rounds of ammunition after intercepting a passenger bus at Kanyonyoo in Kitui County.
The multi-agency security team stopped the bus during a routine inspection along the Thika–Garissa Highway as it travelled from Dadaab towards Nairobi.
Officers searched luggage stored on the overhead rack serving several passenger seats.
Rounds Concealed Among Meat
During the inspection, officers discovered a blue woven carrier bag containing pieces of meat.
A closer search reportedly revealed a black nylon package concealed among the meat.
Inside the package were 48 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition, a calibre commonly used with AK-47-type rifles.
The ammunition was secured by investigators and retained as an exhibit as they work to establish how it came to be transported on the bus.
Two Persons of Interest Arrested
Police arrested two persons of interest after they were reportedly unable to provide a satisfactory explanation about the suspicious consignment or identify its owner.
The two were taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station as detectives began investigations into the source of the ammunition and where it was headed.
The passenger bus was also detained to facilitate further inquiries.

Investigators are now working to establish who packaged the ammunition, where it originated and who was expected to receive it.
Police have not conclusively linked either of the two people arrested to ownership or intended use of the rounds as investigations continue.
The recovery comes amid continued security operations along major transport corridors connecting northern Kenya to Nairobi.
Authorities have also urged passengers and transport operators to remain vigilant, particularly during security checks designed to detect prohibited items being moved through public transport.
