Main Story

Deadly Police Chase Ends in Tragedy

A suspected drug trafficking operation took a tragic turn along the Malaba-Webuye road after a motorcyclist was killed during a police pursuit involving a white Mazda CX-5.

The operation was conducted by the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) in Bungoma, working alongside Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from Webuye West.

According to the reported operation, detectives had received intelligence about a vehicle suspected of transporting narcotics and subsequently positioned themselves along the highway to intercept it.

However, when the Mazda CX-5, registration number KDY 338F, approached, its driver allegedly noticed the officers and accelerated, prompting a pursuit.

The chase ended in a fatal collision involving a red TVS motorcycle bearing registration number KMFV 109F. The rider, identified as Muzungu Munialo, died in the incident.

Driver Escapes as Police Discover Drug Consignment

Following the crash, the driver reportedly abandoned the Mazda and fled on foot before officers could apprehend him.

Detectives later searched the vehicle after traffic officers had completed processing the accident scene.

A search conducted at the police station uncovered 162 bales of suspected cannabis, carefully wrapped in yellow cellotape.

The seized consignment weighed approximately 170.8 kilograms and was estimated to have a street value of KSh 5,124,000.

Additional Number Plate Raises Questions

Investigators also discovered another registration plate, KF2 8588, on the back seat of the Mazda.

The additional plate is suspected to have been intended to disguise the vehicle’s identity, although its alleged purpose remains subject to investigation.

Both the vehicle and the recovered narcotics have since been handed over to NANIB Bungoma as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, detectives are expected to pursue leads that could help identify and apprehend the driver who escaped following the deadly collision.

The incident highlights the human cost of suspected drug trafficking and the risks associated with attempts to evade law enforcement.

As detectives continue their search for the fleeing driver, the incident leaves a difficult question: how many more innocent lives could be put at risk in the fight against drug trafficking?
