Main Story

A Routine Workday Turns Into a Medical Emergency

Leonard Patrick Kinyua was working as a private hire driver when another vehicle suddenly lost control and crashed into his car.

The impact left Leonard with serious injuries to both legs. He sustained a fracture around his left knee and another injury to his right ankle, with both conditions requiring medical attention and surgery.

As the main provider for his family, the accident came with another major concern beyond the physical pain — how he would meet the cost of treatment.

Medical Bills Became a Major Concern

Leonard says the initial estimate for his surgery, hospital stay and medication was around KSh300,000. The amount later climbed to approximately KSh400,000.

For a breadwinner recovering from a sudden accident, such a bill could have placed significant pressure on the entire household.

Fortunately, Leonard had been contributing towards the Social Health Authority (SHA), even though he had never expected to be the person who would eventually need to use the cover.

He says SHA contributed KSh148,000 towards his treatment, helping reduce the amount his family would otherwise have had to raise.

‘I Was Paying for My Children’

Leonard explains that his decision to contribute to SHA was largely motivated by his children.

At the time, he did not imagine that he would personally depend on the cover after an accident. But when the unexpected happened, the contribution became an important source of financial relief.

The support, he says, gave him greater peace of mind as he focused on treatment and recovery instead of being overwhelmed by the full hospital bill.

Back on the Road and Looking Ahead

After completing his treatment and returning to work, Leonard says his outlook has changed.

He is encouraged by the progress his children are making and believes his family is gradually finding its footing again after the difficult period.

His experience has also changed the way he looks at preparedness among private hire drivers.

A Call for Drivers to Prepare

Leonard says many private hire drivers operate without the backing of a Sacco or other strong support structures.

He also notes that some drivers may struggle to afford additional personal accident insurance, leaving them vulnerable when an unexpected incident occurs.

His message to fellow drivers and other Kenyans is simple: prepare before an emergency happens.

For Leonard, the accident was a reminder that emergencies can happen without warning, and having some form of medical and financial protection can make a major difference when life suddenly takes an unexpected turn.

Leonard’s experience is a reminder that while no one can predict an accident, preparing for the unexpected can make the road to recovery a little less difficult.
