Night Journey Turns Tragic
Harrison Muchai, a casual labourer, is currently fighting for his life at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital following a brutal encounter with a hippopotamus. The attack happened on Saturday evening as he made his way home from Gakindu Shopping Centre.
Muchai had reportedly crossed over from the Mbeere side after buying basic household items when he was suddenly attacked near the river at around 8 p.m.
Severe Injuries and Emergency Response
Family members say the injuries were extensive, with deep wounds on his shoulders and lower body. Neighbours quickly mobilised after receiving distress calls, arranging urgent transport to rush him to Kimbimbi Sub-County Hospital.
Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was later transferred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital later that night for specialised care.
Residents who responded to the scene described the attack as terrifying, noting that it was only by sheer luck that Muchai survived the encounter.
Growing Fear Among Residents
Locals say such incidents are becoming alarmingly common along River Thiba. Community members are now warning each other to remain extra cautious, especially at night when hippos leave the water to graze.
One resident advised that spotting a hippo requires immediate caution, as the animals are highly unpredictable and dangerous.
Second Attack in Weeks
The latest incident comes barely weeks after another man, 52-year-old Simon Githaka Gichuki, was attacked near Gakungu Bridge along the same river while walking home from Ngurubani town.
The repeated attacks have sparked concern among residents, who are now calling for urgent intervention to prevent further injuries or loss of life.
