5 Reasons on how to earn respect from kids

Published on

If kids aren’t listening to you when you ask them to do something, you should try these helpful tips.

1. Use the Golden Rule. Treat others as you want to be treated.

If you want children to respect you, you must also treat them with respect. Treating your child with love and respect will lead to them listening and respecting you more because then they will see that you value them. They might be young, but don’t undermine them, they are very smart.

2. Make Sure Your Words Have Consequences

If you want your child to listen and respect you, you must exactly do as you promised. If you tell your child they will get a five-minute time out for misbehavior, then you must give them the time out. For instance, if you had told your child that if they break a glass, there’s no TV for the whole day that should be implemented, it is from that they learn their lesson and wouldn’t dare repeat the same mistake over again.

3. Avoid making big threats.

Remember you are dealing with a child; in as much as she may have upset you, they are young and they can’t always do the right thing. Making bigger threats won’t make your child less likely to act out, use a different simpler approach or a practical example.

4. Focus more on Relationship than Rules

Children need to be shown that they are valued, and there is no better way to show this than giving them your full attention ‘Bonding’. This will help build a relationship where you will both listen and respect each other.

Don’t also be too busy; for them, create time for them, hang out with them, and get to connect with them. That way, you can be able to know what they love doing and what doesn’t sit right with them.

5. Acknowledge your children’s effort and good behavior.

In as much as we are talking about gaining respect, your children also want your approval, so it’s important to recognize their effort, particularly if they’ve tried hard.

This principle applies even in situations when the outcome isn’t ideal.

When you appreciate their efforts, they’ll feel proud of themselves, and they’ll feel motivated to try hard next time. And more importantly accord you respect.
