Main Story
Deadly Shooting Rocks Oregon Elementary School
A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, has left four people dead, including three young pupils and a teacher. The suspected attacker, a 16-year-old boy from the area, also died during the incident after a community member confronted him, according to police.
The children who lost their lives were aged five, eight and 11. A seven-year-old pupil and a 54-year-old teacher were also shot and rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims or the teenage suspect. Investigators are also yet to establish whether the boy had any connection to the school or what may have prompted the attack

How the Attack Unfolded
Police began receiving emergency reports at approximately 12:59 p.m. local time after a caller reported that someone armed with a long gun was firing at their vehicle.
Further emergency calls soon alerted authorities that the suspect had entered Silver Rail Elementary School. Police said he gained access by firing at the locked doors.
A community member who witnessed the unfolding incident followed the teenager into the building and shot him, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz.
Officers arrived within minutes of the first emergency call and confirmed that the suspect was dead. They subsequently searched the premises to establish the extent of the attack and assist with the emergency response.
School Closed as Community Mourns
The tragedy has deeply affected families, school staff and residents across Bend, a city in the US state of Oregon.
Steven Cook, a senior administrator in the local school district, expressed sorrow over the deaths, saying the community was struggling to come to terms with what had happened.
Classes across the district were cancelled on Friday to allow learners, staff and families time to grieve and begin processing the tragedy. Silver Rail Elementary serves approximately 450 pupils and has more than 40 adult staff members.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting, including the circumstances that led to the attack and the suspect’s possible links to the institution
School Shootings Remain a Major US Concern
The attack has renewed attention on the persistent problem of gun violence in American learning institutions.
Figures cited in the original report from the K-12 School Shooting Database recorded 235 shooting incidents at US schools in the previous year, with at least 140 more reported so far in the current year.
As investigators work to establish what happened in Bend, the loss of young lives has once again placed school safety and the protection of children at the centre of public concern.
- Every child deserves to learn in safety, and every family deserves the assurance that sending their children to school will not expose them to violence.
