Veteran goalkeeper set for 16th season as Bayern plans gradual transition in goalkeeping department

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2027, the Bundesliga champions confirmed on Friday.

The 40-year-old, widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history, was previously set to become a free agent in the summer. His new deal ensures he will enter a 16th season with Bayern since joining from FC Schalke 04 in 2011.

Neuer described the extension as a “clear decision after taking some time to reflect,” adding that Bayern remains a place where “all conditions are met” to compete at the highest level.

Planned transition in goalkeeping role

According to reports, Bayern intend to gradually reduce Neuer’s workload during the 2026–27 season to ease the development of backup keeper Jonas Urbig. The club has also extended the contract of third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich for another year, reinforcing continuity in the squad.

Legacy and achievements

Neuer’s career at Bayern has been defined by sustained dominance domestically and success in Europe. He has won the Bundesliga a record 13 times and lifted the UEFA Champions League twice with the club, alongside multiple domestic cup triumphs.

Internationally, he was a key figure in Germany’s 2014 FIFA World Cup-winning squad and earned 124 caps before retiring from international football in 2024.

He was also recognized for his elite performances on the European stage well into his late 30s, including standout displays in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds.

A landmark career continues

Since redefining the modern “sweeper-keeper” role, Neuer has remained central to Bayern’s identity through multiple managerial eras and squad rebuilds. His extension signals both his continued importance on the pitch and Bayern’s preference for a managed, rather than abrupt, transition in a key position.
