Government shares update
The Kenyan government recently provided an update on the devastating fire incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy. While initial reports suggested that 70 children were missing, the government seemingly confirmed that all 330 students have been accounted for.
Tragically, 21 students lost their lives in the fire, with 19 bodies recovered from the burnt dormitory and two additional deaths occurring in the hospital. All 166 girls were safe at home with their parents, while the 164 boys were accounted for.
The government deployed health professionals to the scene to provide medical care and support to the injured and affected families. Mental health services are also being offered to help parents cope with the loss.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the government pathologist are conducting investigations into the cause of the fire. The identification of the 19 victims remains ongoing.
The government has provided essential medical supplies and equipment to support the response efforts, including mass casualty kits and trauma kits. The Ministry of Health’s forensic team is also assisting with the identification process.
