Two Suspects Arrested After Sh1 Million Robbery

Detectives have arrested two men suspected of involvement in a robbery in which a woman was allegedly robbed of Sh1 million at gunpoint in Nandi County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects, aged 54 and 34, were apprehended in Mudete, Sabatia Sub-County, Vihiga County, during an intelligence-led operation conducted overnight on October 29.

The arrests followed investigations into the October 19 incident in Chemobo village, Aldai Constituency.

In a statement released on Friday, October 30, detectives said the operation involved officers from Serem, Hamisi and Sabatia, working alongside the Officer in Charge of CRIB Western.

How the Attack Unfolded

The robbery reportedly began after the woman withdrew Sh1 million from a bank in Mbale at approximately 2:50 pm.

She was accompanied by a friend, and the money was intended to purchase building materials.

After completing their banking business, the two boarded a matatu before alighting at Shamakhokho PSV stage. They then hired a motorcycle to take them to Chemobo village.

Their journey took a dangerous turn near Erusui Girls Secondary School, where a white Toyota Probox allegedly blocked their path.

According to investigators, four men emerged from the vehicle, with two reportedly carrying pistols. The suspects allegedly confronted the two travellers before escaping with the cash.

The attackers also reportedly took a separate bag containing the woman’s National Identity Card, Co-operative Bank ATM card and an Itel mobile phone.

They are said to have fled towards Serem Town after the incident.

House Search Yields Mobile Phones and Other Items

Following the robbery, detectives launched investigations to establish the circumstances of the attack and identify those responsible.

The subsequent operation in Mudete resulted in the arrest of the two suspects. A search conducted at one of their residences reportedly uncovered several items that investigators suspect could be connected to criminal activity.

The recovered items included two pocket phones, ten assorted mobile phones, a handcuff, several Safaricom and Airtel SIM cards, a penknife and a screwdriver.

Detectives also reportedly found several cut-out motor vehicle registration number plates.

Investigators are expected to examine the items to establish their origins and determine whether they could provide evidence linking the suspects to the robbery or other offences.

Detectives Investigate Possible Links to Other Robberies

The investigation is not limited to the Chemobo incident.

According to the DCI, officers are pursuing additional leads to establish whether the two suspects could be connected to other similar robberies reported in the region.

Investigators are also working to determine whether more individuals were involved in the October 19 attack.

The arrests mark a development in the probe, although the extent of the suspects’ alleged involvement remains under investigation.

The recovered items and other evidence are expected to help detectives piece together the events surrounding the robbery and establish whether the suspects have links to other reported incidents.

The suspects remain entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty in court.

As detectives follow the leads uncovered in Mudete, the big question remains: will the arrests help recover the stolen money and reveal everyone involved in the alleged robbery?
