Main Story
KDF Soldier Found Dead at Base
A KDF soldier has been found dead at a military operation base in Marsabit County, prompting an investigation involving both police and military authorities.
The deceased was identified as Corporal Kelvin Thuku.
The incident was reported on Sunday, September 27, after a colleague became concerned when Thuku failed to respond to several phone calls.
The colleague reportedly went to check on him at the Karare Forward Operation Base, where he found the soldier lying in a pool of blood.
Severe Throat Injury Discovered
According to preliminary information, Thuku had suffered a deep injury to his throat.
Police and Military Police officers visited the base together with the facility’s medical officer. Thuku was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators processed the area and documented evidence as they began working to establish what had happened before his death.
A blood-stained military knife was recovered at the scene and is being treated as a key piece of evidence. Thuku’s mobile phone was also found and taken into consideration as investigations continue.
Murder or Suicide?
Authorities have not yet determined whether the death was self-inflicted or involved another person.
Investigators are expected to examine the physical evidence, witness accounts and other information from the base as they attempt to reconstruct Thuku’s final moments.
Colleagues reportedly said the corporal had not shown obvious signs of distress or unusual behaviour before the incident, adding to calls for a comprehensive investigation.
Postmortem Expected to Provide Answers
Thuku’s body was transferred to the Marsabit County Referral Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved ahead of a postmortem examination.
The examination is expected to help establish the precise cause and circumstances of death and could provide investigators with additional evidence as they determine whether the case should be treated as suicide or suspected homicide.
For now, both police and military authorities are continuing to investigate, with the circumstances surrounding the soldier’s death still unclear.
As investigators piece together the evidence from Karare, the postmortem and forensic findings could be crucial in answering the biggest question surrounding Corporal Thuku’s death: what really happened inside the operation base?
