Shooting Outside Manisa School
Panic broke out on Tuesday morning outside Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Manisa province after a gunman opened fire.
The attack left at least 11 people injured, with two victims said to be in critical condition. Emergency teams responded to the scene as police launched an operation to identify and apprehend the suspected shooter.
The suspect is reportedly a student at the school and is 15 years old.
CCTV Captures Suspect With Shotgun
Security camera footage reportedly captured the teenager moving through deserted streets before the shooting.
In the footage, he appears to inspect a shotgun while walking calmly through the area. Another recording later appeared to show the suspected attacker fleeing from the school with the firearm still in his possession.
Authorities have not yet established why the teenager allegedly carried out the attack.
Family Members Detained
Turkey’s Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said the suspect’s mother, father and grandfather had also been detained as part of the investigation.
Under Turkish law, the teenager must appear before a court before an official arrest can be ordered.
Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including how the teenager obtained the firearm and what may have led to the attack.
Fresh Concerns Over School Safety
The incident has added to growing concerns about violence in Turkish schools.
It is reportedly the third school shooting recorded in Turkey this year. Two deadly incidents in April triggered public anger and prompted authorities to introduce additional security measures ahead of the 2026–2027 academic year.
Those measures included tighter controls around firearms as the government sought to respond to a worrying rise in violence.
Turkey had previously not been known for a pattern of school shootings, making the recent incidents particularly concerning.
Education Ministry Responds
Turkey’s Education Ministry expressed sorrow over the incident and said the shooting had deeply affected the country, particularly the education community.
Three investigators from the ministry have reportedly been sent to Manisa to assist with inquiries surrounding the incident.
The latest shooting comes as authorities face mounting pressure to strengthen security around schools while also addressing the underlying causes of youth violence.
Earlier Deadly Attack
One of the country’s other recent school shootings occurred in Kahramanmaras, where a 14-year-old reportedly killed nine pupils aged between 10 and 11 as well as a teacher.
The attacker died at the scene.
With another school shooting now under investigation, questions over access to firearms, student safety and how authorities can prevent similar incidents are once again at the centre of public debate.
When violence reaches the school gate, the question is no longer only what happened but what can be done to ensure it never happens again.
