Nairobi governor Sakaja issues statement to curb the ongoing floods in county

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja addressed the city’s flood crisis in a statement on Wednesday, April 24th.

Damage Assessment

Roughly 60,000 residents impacted, with women and children most affected. Tragically, 4 lives lost and 6 people missing. Kibra, Lindi, Mathare, Baba Dogo, Githurai, and Zimmerman are the hardest-hit areas.

Infrastructure Damage

Multiple bridges compromised, including Mathare North John Saga, Huruma-Gateway, Ngumba, and others.

Overflowing Ngong River flooded Mbagathi Roundabout, Ectoville Industrial Estate, and Mwiki Ward.

Mau Mau riverbank breaches inundated churches and homes in Westlands.

Kiambiu settlement in Starehe saw at least 10 households affected.

A bridge in Mukuru-Kayaba slum was washed away.

Governor’s Directives

Strict enforcement for Private Service Providers (PSPs) to properly dispose of waste at Dandora dumpsite.

Immediate suspension of all excavations near rivers.

Mandatory relocation for residents living along riverbeds and dangerously high areas.

Urging all citizens to stay vigilant, take precautions, and avoid unnecessary travel in flood zones.
