Couple Allegedly Kidnapped During Delivery
Police are investigating a chilling kidnapping incident that unfolded after a couple travelled to Baba Ndogo to deliver an Apple Smart Watch ordered by a customer.
Investigators say the husband and wife were intercepted by three men travelling in a white Toyota Axio before being forced into the vehicle, handcuffed and driven away.
KSh1 Million Ransom Demand
According to investigators, the suspects demanded KSh1 million from the couple in exchange for their freedom.
The husband reportedly managed to withdraw KSh17,000, but the suspects allegedly rejected the amount and forced the couple to continue searching for more money.
The suspects later drove them to an Equity Bank branch in Githurai, where the wife remained inside the vehicle while her husband entered the banking hall to withdraw additional cash.
Quick Thinking Leads to Rescue
Inside the bank, the victim discreetly alerted a bank employee about the alleged kidnapping.
Security officers immediately notified police stationed at the premises, prompting officers from the Special Crimes Prevention Unit to respond.
As police arrived, the suspects abandoned the scene. Three fled on foot while the driver sped away with the female victim still inside the vehicle.
Officers fired warning shots during the pursuit and successfully arrested one suspect identified as Stephen Okello Obewa.
Police Officer Linked to the Case
During interrogation, detectives say the arrested suspect admitted his involvement and identified several alleged accomplices, claiming some were serving police officers.
The information reportedly led investigators to arrest Inspector Kelvin Mwangi, the Deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Drive In Police Post, later that evening.
Authorities believe the officer may be connected to a kidnapping and extortion network operating within Nairobi.
Investigations Continue
Police say the kidnappers stole five mobile phones worth approximately KSh120,000, together with the Apple Smart Watch that the victims had been delivering.
Following the failed extortion attempt, the female victim was later abandoned unharmed along Kamiti Road.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kasarani has taken over the investigation and is pursuing other suspects believed to have escaped during the operation.
As detectives widen their investigations, the case has once again raised difficult questions about public trust, accountability, and the fight against organised crime within law enforcement.
