Court Finds Duo Guilty
The Wajir Law Courts have sentenced Abdiaziz Ali, also known as “Odi”, and Abdiwahab Mohamed, alias “Steam Boy”, to death after they were found guilty of violently robbing a boda boda rider.
Senior Principal Magistrate Eric Malesi delivered the verdict after concluding that prosecutors had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The prosecution, led by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Robert Nyoro, presented three witnesses together with several pieces of evidence that convinced the court of the suspects’ involvement.
How the Robbery Happened
The incident occurred on the night of November 13, 2025, along Baraza Park Road in Wajir Township.
The victim, identified as Nesiah Thuranira, was transporting what appeared to be ordinary passengers before several armed accomplices emerged from a nearby corridor.
The gang, armed with knives, assaulted the rider, threatened his life, and stole his mobile phone worth KSh 30,000.
Forced M-Pesa Withdrawals
After the robbery, the attackers forced the victim to an M-Pesa shop and demanded his PIN.
Using the information, they successfully withdrew KSh 15,000 from his account before attempting another withdrawal.
The victim managed to secretly alert the shop attendant, but by then the suspects had already received the cash and transferred an additional KSh 5,000 to another mobile number.
Investigations Linked Suspects to Crime
Police investigations later established that the mobile number used during the fraudulent transactions had been registered using the identity details of the first suspect’s sister without her knowledge.
Investigators also recovered the victim’s stolen phone from the home of the first accused’s mother, further strengthening the prosecution’s case.
Neither of the accused called witnesses during their defence.
Sentence
Following the conviction, the court sentenced both men to death for robbery with violence. They have been granted 14 days to file an appeal if they wish to challenge the ruling.
The case serves as a reminder that violent crimes targeting innocent members of the public can carry the country’s toughest legal penalties.
