Blues Destroy Newcastle in the Penalties after Grabbing a late Lifeline

Chelsea are through to the Carabao Cup semi-finals after beating Newcastle 4-2 on penalties.
Mykhailo Mudryk scored a late equalizer for Chelsea after Callum Wilson had opened the scoring. Kieran Trippier made an error for Mudryk’s goal and also missed the spot in the shootout.

Callum Wilson had seemingly set Newcastle on course for victory with his 16th-minute goal, but Chelsea struck back in stoppage time through Mykhailo Mudryk.

Newcastle, last season’s beaten finalists, will have to continue their wait for their first trophy since 1969 for a bit longer.

The goal for Newcastle was a gift from Chelsea. Coming from a Blues attack down the other end, Levi Colwill’s loose pass in the direction of Caicedo allowed Wilson in, who then ran the ball forward before Benoit Badiashile’s stumble allowed the striker into the box to finish coolly past Djordje Petrovic.

Win or lose, Eddie Howe would have been hoping to have gotten through the 90 minutes without any more injury problems, but early in the second half, he saw star man Gordon hobble off.

Youngsters Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku, and Mudryk all scored penalties from the spot, whereas only Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes managed to equalize from the spot, leaving the other two missing out.

Chelsea will next visit Wolves on Christmas Eve and keep their run for the top 4 in the table.
