It can be very stressful to decide where to live in Nairobi and especially for those of you who are just getting and start life in Nairobi without much knowledge of the best places to live in. To save you the hustle of looking for a house SPM got you. This article is for you to know some of the best places you can choose to live in.

Some of the things you want to consider when looking for a house is, the price (depending on how much you earn, security, and proximity/distance from where you work.

With the increasing rental prices and the rising population SPM Buzz has compiled a list of areas in Nairobi that can be favourable living places with cheap and affordable houses to save you the hustle of house hunting.

  1. Roysambu

Home to one of Kenya’s largest malls, Thika Road Mall, Roysambu is inhabited by the middle class group. It also has a group of people from Nigeria, Rwandese  and Congolese. Its proximity to Thika Road makes it favourable for those working in the city. One bedroom house goes from Ksh 15,000 to Ksh 20,000 per month and a bed sitter goes for Ksh 8,000-12,000.

 

  1. Kikuyu

It is a fast growing area and is the only town on the bypass. The fare to and from CBD is affordable. A bedsitter would go for sh7,000 and one bedroom between 13,000- 16,000 per month

  1. Ruaka

Ruaka is in the North West of Nairobi near the west end of Northern By Pass. Ruaka is home to The Two Rivers Mall which makes there to be an increase in people residing there. A bed sitter would go for Ksh 7,000 – 10,000 while a one bedroom goes for Sh15,000 – sh 20,000 a month.

 

3 Rongai

 

Rongai is a bit far from the city but that does not discredit its beauty and that it’s less populated than many areas in Nairobi. The Masaai Mall is one of the popular shopping centers for the people of Rongai.

 

  1. Embakasi

This is a favourable residential area mostly for lower middle income citizens. It hosts several recreational facilities as well as JKIA. One bedroom goes for Sh 10,000 – 15,000 and a bed sitter goes for sh 6,000 – 9,000.

  1. Utawala

Utawala is not densely populated, but its a safe and cheap place to live in. A bed sitter could go for sh 6000 whereas a one bedroom could cost Ksh14,000 on average. It has fair prices  to and from town.

 

  1. Donholm

 

This is among the oldest estate in Nairobi. It is preferred for its serenity, security and the average cost of living. A one bedroom house would go for sh 10,000 – 18,000 while a bed sitter would go for sh 5,500 – sh 12,000 per month.

 

  1. Mlolongo

Mlolongo is situated along Mombasa road. It is also preferred for its affordability to and from town. Mlolongo has affordable houses that range from sh 8,500 – 15,000 for a one bedroom and sh 6,500 for a bed sitter.

  1. Kahawa Sukari/Wendani

These two places are highly inhibited by university students of campuses around those areas, which makes life in those places more affordable and there is enough security. A bedsitter goes for about sh 8,000 while one bedroom goes for sh 10,000 – 15,000.

 

  1. Kangemi/Uthiru

These two towns are in Westlands, Nairobi and host both the middle class and the lower class. A one bedroom house in Uthiru goes for sh 8,000 – sh 13,000 and a bedsitter would go for about sh 5,000 – 8,000.

 

With a good paying salary, you wouldn’t mind living in a sparsely populated area, more peaceful with less noise and safety. The SPM Buzz team has also compiled a list of areas that would need you to dig deeper into your pockets and offer you a  good place to live in.

 

  1. Karen / Runda / Kitsuru / Muthaiga

Although this place is a bit further from town, the serenity and natural scenery is more than the distance would matter. The places are considered posh with mansions and villas for notable people in society.

  1. Kilimani / Riara / Lavington

Though not too far from town, the neighbourhoods of these places are hosting mansions and gated communities. There is high security and its a peaceful environment.

 

  1. South C / Parklands

Largely known for the high population of Asians, it is a highly secured and peaceful area. Its not too far from the city. It can be easily accessible.

 

  1. Ridgeways

Ridgeways is located along Kiambu Road just before Muthaiga and is around Thome. Housing is in the form of bungalows and apartments, some with swimming pools and servant quarters.

  1. Westlands

 

Westlands is near Nairobi city. It is largely known for entertainment joints and also considered peaceful and safe.
