Netflix’s most popular series to date, Squid Game, will be returning for season two on December 26th.
On Wednesday, Netflix announced that its Emmy-winning drama ‘Squid Game’ will return with Season 2 on December 26. Additionally, the streamer revealed that a third and final season is also in plan.
In a statement, Hwang Dong-hyuk—the director, producer, and writer—announced on social media that ‘Squid Game’ will conclude with its third season, which is expected to be released in 2025.
“It’s been almost three years since season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place. I am beyond excited to be writing this letter to announce the date for season 2 and share the news of season 3, the final season.” Director Hwang Dong Hyuk wrote.
Season 1 of ‘Squid Game’ secured Netflix’s title as the most popular series of all time, amassing over 1.65 billion hours of viewing (equivalent to 190,000 years) within its first 28 days on the platform. The first season featured hundreds of contestants, each desperate for money, who played deadly versions of children’s games to compete for a substantial cash prize.
When it debuted in September 2021, ‘Squid Game’ became a pop culture sensation. Consequently, it was the first non-English language series nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys. Additionally, it received 14 nominations, with Jung-jae winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and director Dong-hyuk earning the award for Top Director.

Squid Game: The Challenge’ Renewed for Season 2 Amidst Criticism
Along with the announcement of Squid Game season 3, Netflix also announced that they would be renewing the live-action reality show Squid Game: The Challenge for season two. There has been far less commotion surrounding this renewal as the first season seemed to be a production nightmare and placed contestants under less-than-ethical circumstances.
Additionally, many fans of the original series have noted that the existence of the reality show undermines the message Hwang Dong-hyuk intended to convey in ‘Squid Game.
