Robert Downey Jr. has returned to the Marvel superhero world after five years, but not as Iron Man.
Instead of stepping back into his legendary Iron Man suit, the comic book character he portrayed in over nine Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, he will instead be playing as Doctor Doom in a new movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday.”
The news was announced on Saturday at San Diego Comic during the Marvel panel, where Downey Jr. revealed himself on stage in front of the crowd where he had concealed himself behind Dr. Doom’s iconic mask.
Downey stated that it was just a new mask but still the same task, and he also shared that he enjoyed playing complicated stories.
“New mask, same task; what did I tell you? I like playing complicated characters.“ Downey said.
The 59-year-old actor helped start the Marvel movie universe by starring in the first film, Iron Man, in 2008. He last appeared in a Marvel film in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Downey has also appeared in several Marvel franchise movies, including 2018’s Infinity War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Unfortunately, his character was famously killed off in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
