19 Suspects Arrested in Machakos Illicit Brew Crackdown

Police in Machakos County have arrested 19 suspects following an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected illegal alcohol production at a homestead in Misuuni Village, Mumbuni Location.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the operation was conducted by officers from Machakos Police Station on August 15, 2026, leading to the recovery of hundreds of litres of suspected illicit alcoholic drinks and materials believed to be connected to their production.

The seizure forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat the manufacture and distribution of unregulated alcohol in different parts of the country.

Chang’aa, Kang’ara and Brewing Materials Recovered

During the raid, officers recovered a total of 770 litres of suspected illicit brew, comprising 60 litres of chang’aa and 710 litres of kang’ara.

Police also seized 25 kilogrammes of ammonium chloride, 10 kilogrammes of sugar and assorted equipment believed to have been used in the brewing process.

The recovered substances and equipment were secured as exhibits to support investigations and any subsequent court proceedings.

Authorities have not provided further details about the individual roles of the suspects or whether additional arrests are expected as investigations continue.

Suspects Await Court Proceedings

The 19 suspects were taken to Machakos Police Station, where they were held pending arraignment in court, according to the police service.

The NPS said the operation was part of a broader campaign aimed at curbing the production, distribution and consumption of illicit alcohol.

The crackdown comes amid continued police operations against suspected illegal brewing establishments in various parts of Kenya.

Unregulated alcoholic drinks remain a public safety concern because their ingredients, strength and production conditions may not meet required safety standards. Authorities have continued to target suspected production sites as part of efforts to enforce the law and protect consumers.

The next stage of the case will depend on the investigations and the legal process facing the suspects.

As the crackdown on illicit alcohol continues, the challenge remains ensuring that enforcement efforts translate into safer communities and greater accountability across the supply chain.
