Highway Crash Leads to Drug Discovery
Police in Nakuru have uncovered a suspected narcotics trafficking operation following a serious road accident along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
The incident occurred between Shinners Boys and the Mbaruk area after a Mazda CX-5 travelling towards Nairobi collided with an oncoming Scania trailer.
According to preliminary investigations, the SUV was attempting to overtake when its driver lost control, causing the vehicle to crash.
Driver Flees After Collision
The impact left the Mazda badly damaged, particularly around its front section, with the vehicle spinning before coming to a stop.
Rather than remain at the scene, however, the driver reportedly abandoned the wreckage and fled.
What initially appeared to be a road accident soon took a different turn when officers began processing the vehicle.
Six Sacks of Bhang Discovered
Police officers from Nakuru Central Police Station found six sacks containing bhang inside the SUV.
The narcotics weighed approximately 241.5 kilogrammes, with detectives estimating their street value at Sh7,245,000.
The discovery has now turned the crash scene into a key part of an ongoing investigation into a suspected drug trafficking network.
NANIB Takes Over Probe
The recovered exhibits have been secured as detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) in Nakuru continue with the case.
Investigators are also searching for the driver, who remains at large.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has reiterated its commitment to pursuing individuals and networks involved in the illegal narcotics trade.
For now, detectives will be looking to establish where the consignment originated, its intended destination and who else may have been involved in the operation.
