Detectives have intensified their crackdown on mobile phone theft networks after recovering over 200 stolen devices in Trans Nzoia County. The latest operation, which led to the arrest of two suspects, sheds light on a growing black market for stolen electronics and the sophisticated methods used to alter devices.

Highlights:

  • Two suspects arrested in Lessos, Trans Nzoia County
  • 213 mobile phones recovered during a police raid
  • Authorities also seized a phone reprogramming device and laptops
  • Investigation underway to uncover a wider criminal network
  • Operation follows a recent similar bust in Runda

Main Story:

Major Raid in Lessos

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), working alongside the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau and Matisi Police Station, conducted a targeted raid in Lessos. The operation took place at a residence located near Airport Church, where two suspects were apprehended.

During the search, detectives recovered 213 mobile phones of different brands and models, pointing to a well-organised operation dealing in stolen electronics.

Tools of the Trade

In addition to the phones, officers confiscated a specialised device believed to be used for altering mobile phone identities. The machine, commonly associated with reprogramming stolen devices, suggests that the suspects may have been part of a larger syndicate involved in reselling tampered phones.

Three HP laptops were also recovered, further raising suspicions about the scale and sophistication of the operation.

Investigations Expand

The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. Authorities are now working to trace the origin of the recovered phones and identify other individuals linked to the operation.

All seized items have been secured as evidence and will undergo forensic analysis to support the case and potentially connect the suspects to other theft incidents.

Link to Wider Network

This arrest comes shortly after another raid in Runda, where detectives uncovered a hidden electronics operation disguised as a cosmetics shop. That search led to the recovery of dozens of phones, laptops, and dismantled devices.

One of the phones seized in the earlier operation was traced back to a violent robbery in Ruaka, strengthening suspicions of a coordinated network operating across multiple locations.

Public Urged to Stay Alert

Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling organised crime rings dealing in stolen electronics. Members of the public are being encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help curb the illegal trade.

With investigations ongoing, detectives hope to expose the full extent of the network and bring all those involved to justice.
