YY comedian mourns the loss of his grandmother.

Kenyan content creator Oliver Otieno, popularly known as Comedian YY, is in mourning after the loss of his grandmother.

On September 18, YY took to Instagram to announce the death of his grandmother, Dani (Mama Zilpa Ogola). In his touching tribute, YY expressed gratitude for her significant role in his education and personal development. He wrote, “My grandma has rested… Rest well, Dani (Mama Zilpa Ogola). You have fought a very painful battle. Thank you for your influence on my education.”

YY revealed that his grandmother will be laid to rest on September 27, 2024, in Kosele village. He included a traditional Luo farewell message in his post, saying, “Nind Gi Kwe Min Dolly,” which translates to a heartfelt goodbye.

The announcement has garnered significant support from YY’s followers and the entertainment community. Many have expressed their condolences, recognizing the profound impact Mama Zilpa had on YY’s life.

A Glimpse into YY’s Early Life

As fans offer their condolences, it’s a moment to reflect on YY’s journey. In 2023, his mother revealed that his early life was marked by severe burns from accidents. Despite these challenges, YY displayed resilience and a natural comedic talent.

According to YY’s mother, he experienced multiple severe burns during his childhood, including one from a hot iron rod and others from boiling water. Despite these painful accidents, YY’s determination never wavered. He began performing in church skits during primary school, showing early signs of his comedic talent.

Proving Doubters Wrong

In a candid interview, YY spoke about the skepticism he faced, particularly from a critical uncle who doubted his comedic aspirations. “There’s this uncle of mine who told me, Hakuna chance yenye huyu jamaa ana… This guy is a thief, and he is going to be shot soon. Juu sikuwahi onekana kwa TV show ya Churchill.” Comedian YY shared.

After his uncle’s remarks, YY walked out of the meeting with his parents and the uncle, vowing to prove him wrong.

The father of one promised to do everything in his power to make sure he became what his uncle thought he couldn’t amount to.

“I kept doing my thing, and then time came ya kucome kwa TV inajileta tuh yenyewe now that Aibu came back to my uncle. “I got promoted to the main show, and the rest is history,” Comedian YY shared.

Why YY Never Dropped the Mic

The father of one, who became emotional while explaining why he kept pursuing his dream career despite facing trolls and criticism from his uncle, said he chose to endure the pain and stay resilient. He wanted to ensure his mother lived a good life and, above all, to gain recognition and respect for her.

“Bro, one of the reasons I worked hard was for people to treat my mom with respect… I have seen a lot, and my mom has carried so many burdens on my behalf… My mom has been told words for things that I did that she did not tell me to do.

And so I always wanted people to be like,Pale ni kwa kina YY, and you know what? You have to put some respect on that name, and I’m glad when people say, Wewe ulifika usalimiangi watu, and I am like, Yeah, mama yangu alifika.” YY said.

YY’s journey is a testament to the resilience and determination required to succeed in the entertainment industry. His story serves as an inspiration to aspiring comedians and artists everywhere, illustrating that even the most successful figures have faced significant obstacles on their path to success.
