Businessman Jimi Wanjigi was released on a Ksh10 million personal bond on Tuesday after being arrested and detained the previous day. He appeared in court where he pleaded not guilty to charges of illegal firearm possession.
Wanjigi’s legal team, led by Senior Counsel Paul Muite, argued that the arrest was unlawful as it contravened a previous court order barring his detention. They also claimed that the firearm license revocation used to charge Wanjigi was done maliciously and in contempt of court.
The court has scheduled a hearing on September 12 to determine whether the charges against Wanjigi will be dismissed.
In addition, Wanjigi’s co-accused, Kibe, alleged police brutality during their arrest, claiming physical abuse.
The case has sparked controversy, with Wanjigi’s supporters accusing the government of political persecution.
