American actor and comedian Tiffany Haddish defended her controversial TikTok video of a supermarket visit in Zimbabwe. She explained that, in fact, it was intended to challenge the misconception that there is “war every day” in Africa.
Tiffany encountered backlash from some Zimbabweans on social media after she posted a video showing her strolling through the aisles of a supermarket chain in Harare, which is the capital city of Zimbabwe. Consequently, the video sparked criticism and debate among viewers.
“Hey everyone, I’m here in Harare, Zimbabwe, and look at this grocery store! They have a grocery store here.” Tiffany said in disbelief.
The American actor walked through the grocery store, amazed at how large the African store was.

One fan commented on the TikTok video, “Did you think we ate grass?”
Another one said “washed up, failed comedian, actress trying so hard to be relevant.” Your ignorance and stupidity will be your end.”
A third person pointed out that Americans hold a “misguided perception of Africa, believing that its inhabitants live in primitive conditions, reside in mud huts, lack access to clean water, and are devoid of modern amenities like electricity and the internet.” Therefore, they highlighted the importance of correcting these misconceptions.

Tiffany’s response to the criticism.
Haddish took to her social media to address the criticism, stating that she had been taught a false narrative about Africa. As a result, she aimed to challenge and correct these misconceptions.
“I am an American, a Black one at that, and told for years that people are starving in Africa, showing pictures of babies with flies on them.”
She added that she had been told stories about how Africans killed each other and that there was war every day.
“Crazy stories” about how Africans “kill each other” and that there is “war every day.”.
However, Tiffany Haddish mentioned that her trip to Zimbabwe had opened her eyes, and she had been “finding out the truth” about the continent.
She added that, when sharing the video, she had hoped it would help people in the USA change the narrative that Africa had nothing.
“I thought I would share because I know people in the USA that believe Africans don’t have anything,” she wrote.
Tiffany’s fans came to her defense.
Amidst all this, some fans came to support Tiffany, saying, “She is proving her fellow Americans wrong; indeed, we do have everything they thought we didn’t.”
Another one said, “We like that you like our grocery store and all the products that shocked you are just the basics here as well; we really aren’t in the forest hanging on trees.”
