Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris has shared the reason why she plans to ban school uniforms in the country.
In a video shared online by the female Rep, Passaris said that she plans to see that school uniforms are banned because they are exploiting the poor and disadvantaging those who cannot afford them, thus favoring the rich.
She specifically said that those who are in Kibera are finding it hard to pay for school uniforms because they are way more expensive than expected. She added that there are quite a couple of countries that are not wearing school uniforms and banned them a while back. She advised Kenya to follow suit, as wearing uniforms is a colonial mentality that should be erased and done away with.
Some other school uniforms cost as much as 30,000 for a full set, which she says is way too expensive, especially with the current hard-hitting economic state of the country. She assured the public that she was going to push the agenda and see that they were banned.
Apparently, school uniforms are always thought to be good because they can lead to improved academic performance. When students are dressed in the same clothing, it reduces the pressure to conform to fashion trends and can help them focus on their studies. It can also improve their sense of belonging and create a more positive school environment.
There’s also a sense of safety that the students get when they are dressed in school uniforms. But now, according to Esther Passaris, students should wear home clothes because it is easier for them to use the uniform money to pay fees.
