The Obama’s back Kamala Harris for 2024 presidential run

Published on

Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have officially endorsed Kamala Harris in her bid for the White House.

The endorsement was made public in a video released earlier today. In the video, Harris is seen receiving a phone call from the Obamas while backstage at an event, accompanied by a Secret Service agent.

The former president praised Harris, saying, “Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office.” Michelle Obama also expressed her support, telling Harris, “I am proud of you. This is going to be historic.” She emphasized the significance of Harris’ potential victory, noting the historic nature of the endorsement.

Kamala Harris’ background

Kamala Harris, born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, has a notable career in public service. She earned her law degree from UC Hastings and began as a prosecutor. Harris served as San Francisco District Attorney, California Attorney General, and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2017. She became Vice President in January 2021, making history as the first African American and South Asian American in these roles. Her experience and advocacy on healthcare and civil rights have positioned her as a strong presidential candidate.

This announcement comes as Harris gains momentum as the Democratic Party’s likely nominee for the upcoming election. The Obamas’ endorsement is a major boost for Harris as she prepares for the Democratic National Convention, which starts on August 19 in Chicago. By August 7, the Democratic National Committee is expected to hold a virtual vote to officially nominate Harris and her running mate as the Democratic ticket.

This endorsement is particularly significant following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign and endorse Harris has already secured the support of most Democratic delegates where as other prominent Democratic figures, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former President Bill Clinton, have also endorsed her in recent days.

Harris, who has known the Obamas since before Obama’s election in 2008, thanked them for their support and says that she looks forward to campaigning with them in the lead-up to Election Day on November 5. “We’re going to have some fun with this too, aren’t we?” she added.
