Singer Sofiya Nzau is urging Kenyans to help those displaced by the recent flooding in Nairobi, particularly residents of the Mathare neighborhood.
Nzau visited Mathare and highlighted the desperate situation faced by many who lost homes and loved ones in the floods. Families are separated, with some living in churches and others in mosques.
“The people of Mathare need shelter,” Nzau stated in a video. “The government has affordable housing available, but they aren’t helping those affected by the floods.”

Taking Action
Nzau is partnering with the Mathare Social Justice Centre to raise funds for a temporary shelter. This will alleviate overcrowding in the limited space currently housing displaced people. Many have also lost their jobs due to the floods, further amplifying their hardship.
Government’s Response
President Ruto, in his Labour Day speech, pledged to prioritize the National Housing Fund to build permanent homes for those displaced by the flooding. He also ordered the Ministry of Interior to oversee the evacuation and relocation efforts.
Call for Action
While government action is underway, Nzau’s initiative highlights the urgency of the situation. The residents of Mathare need immediate support for temporary shelter and rebuilding their lives.
