American singer and actor Selena Gomez has made a deeply personal revelation about her health, sharing that she is unable to carry her own children due to medical conditions that would put both her life and the baby’s life in jeopardy.
Selena revealed that she had to come to terms with the fact that she would not be able to experience pregnancy as she had once imagined. “I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children; I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she admitted.
The 32-year-old singer has faced multiple medical challenges over the years. In 2013, she was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and affects various parts of the body. As a result, Selena underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 due to complications from lupus.
In addition to lupus, Selena was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018. To manage the disorder, Selena takes medication that further complicates her chances of carrying a child safely. She previously shared with Rolling Stone in 2022 that her medication might prevent her from having a safe pregnancy.
Looking to the Future: Adoption and Surrogacy
Despite the grief of this realization, Selena remains hopeful about motherhood and is exploring alternative ways to become a parent. She expressed her gratitude for surrogacy and adoption as viable options. “I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” she said.
Selena’s openness to adoption is also influenced by her personal history—her mother, Mandy Teefey, was adopted. As a result, this family connection has helped Selena develop a unique appreciation for adoption. She now views it as a beautiful opportunity as she continues to navigate her journey to motherhood.
The singer, who is currently in a relationship with music producer Benny Blanco, has experienced a shift in her outlook on the future as she embraces the possibility of becoming a mother through non-traditional means. “It’s not exactly how I imagined it, but I’m in a much better place with it now. At the end of the day, I don’t care. The child will be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she said.
Though her health challenges have changed the way she envisions motherhood, Selena remains hopeful and determined to experience the joys of raising a child, whether through surrogacy or adoption.
