Renowned gospel artist Ringtone Apoko is an epitome of grass to grace. Over the years, rumour has it that the singer was actually a ‘chokoraa’ and lived in the streets while he was a young boy.
The singer’s struggles have hardened him and he’s currently among the richest artists in the 254.
Bearing that in mind, Ringtone has shared his story on the odd jobs he used to take on in order to earn a living.
Sharing through a speech at an even, Kenya Online Media captured the musicians story as he narrated dreaming about getting married to a ‘white’ lady in order to enrich his life.

Ringtone’s breakthrough
His dream destination was Mombasa, where he believed his breakthrough would come from as there were many white people at the Coast.
”Nimechotea watu maji kawangware na Riruta. From there, the next job I did was to collect scrap metals na plastics. I did that mpaka nikaenda mpaka Kenya Railway station kwa ule mtu anakata ticket za third class anisaidie kufika Mombasa… Nipate mzungu anioe”
Ringtone did not succeed in his endeavour but a curio seller took him to church, where they schooled him up until he finished high school.
He was later linked to legendary gospel artists such as Daddy Owen and Rufftone, who took him in as their houseboy. He progressively gained fame until he was able to cater for himself.
