President William Ruto has received the prestigious Golden Plate Award from the Academy of Achievement, recognising his exceptional leadership and dedication to transparency, accountability, and public participation. The award, presented on Thursday, September 12, highlights Kenya’s role as a leader in governance innovation across Africa.
The ceremony took place during the launch of Kenya’s 5th National Action Plan (NAP 5) under the Open Government Partnership (OGP), a global initiative focused on promoting open governance. The Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Korir Sing’Oei, presented the award on behalf of the Academy.
The State House praised the award as a testament to President Ruto’s vision and impact on governance. “This award recognises Kenya’s leadership in the OGP framework and sets a benchmark for other African nations,” the statement read.
This is the second time President Ruto has received the Golden Plate Award. He was first inducted into the American Academy of Achievement in 2022, where he was recognised by General Charles Q. Brown for his inspiring journey from humble beginnings in rural Kenya to the presidency. Wayne Reynolds, Chairman of the Academy, lauded Ruto’s perseverance, stating that his story “resonates with many people across the world.”
Ruto now joins a distinguished group of global leaders who have been similarly honoured, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and the late South African President Nelson Mandela.
In May 2024, President Ruto also received the Outstanding Leaders Award from the U.S.-Africa Business Centre, presented in the presence of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. Susan Clark, CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, commended Ruto for “promoting business-led solutions and commitment to trade and investment initiatives to grow Kenya’s economy.”
President Ruto’s leadership has been celebrated beyond the United States. Earlier this year, he was awarded Ghana’s highest honour, the Companion of the Order of the Star of the Volta, by President Nana Akufo-Addo, who described him as “a new generation of African leaders committed to upholding the rule of law and fostering accountability.”

Additionally, Ruto received the ‘Medalha Amílcar Cabral,’ the highest civilian honour in Guinea-Bissau, recognising his bravery and leadership.
