The AUC Chairperson is tasked with 12 key roles as outlined by the African Union. These responsibilities include acting as the Chief Executive Officer, Legal Representative, and Accounting Officer of the Union. The Chairperson’s primary duties involve administering and enforcing AU policies, preparing the Union’s multi-billion-shilling budget, and leading the organization’s diplomatic efforts on the global stage.

Odinga would be responsible for setting the agenda of the AU, determining its structure, and making critical appointments. Additionally, he would handle all AU treaties and legal instruments. On the diplomatic front, the Chairperson must champion AU objectives and interests, attending major summits such as the US-Africa and Italy-Africa summits.

The Chairperson is mandated to facilitate the functioning, decision-making, and reporting of all AU organ meetings,” the AU mandate states. “The role includes ensuring conformity with AU policies and consulting with Member States, institutions, and Regional Economic Communities (RECs).”

In terms of remuneration, the AUC Chairperson receives a monthly salary of Ksh2.4 million (approximately USD 15,577). The role also includes a monthly rental budget of USD 6,000 (around Ksh933,000) to cover housing and utilities. Furthermore, the AU covers 100% of tuition fees for the chairperson’s dependent children studying anywhere except Europe and North America. The chairperson’s spouse is entitled to a 5% allowance of the basic salary, provided they are not earning more than USD 500 (Ksh 77,750) per month.

Odinga has already declared his candidacy and received endorsement from former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. To secure the position, Odinga needs the support of Kenyan President William Ruto, who will lobby other African leaders for backing. Odinga aims to replace the current Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and would serve a four-year term if elected.
