Oscar Sudi advices Gachagua on what to do during his impeachment

Published on

Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi urged Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday to take personal responsibility for his actions in light of the recent impeachment motion that has significantly impacted Kenya’s political landscape.

Highlights

  • Gachagua has received numerous advice on his impeachment
  • Oscar Sudi believes Gachagua should take responsibility

In a Facebook message directed at the embattled DP, Sudi emphasized that Gachagua should face the consequences of his decisions rather than involve the entire community in the fallout. This call for accountability followed unrest in Mathira Constituency, Gachagua’s home area, shortly after MPs voted for his impeachment.

Earlier that day, the National Assembly voted overwhelmingly to impeach Gachagua, with 281 MPs supporting the motion—setting a historic precedent under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution. Known for his candidness on social media, Sudi advised Gachagua to prepare for the Senate hearings scheduled for next week, where his fate will be determined. “The mountain hasn’t been touched,” Sudi stated, adding, “It’s an individual paying for his misdeeds. Own your actions and carry your own burden, not the community.”

The impeachment motion, led by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, has sent shockwaves through the political arena.

It was a hard-fought battle, marked by intense debate in the House. Gachagua defended himself against 11 charges but ultimately failed to convince the majority of MPs, with only 44 voting to save him and one abstaining.

Sudi, a vocal supporter of the impeachment motion, reminded Gachagua that his personal accountability is crucial as the Senate prepares to address the matter. His message was clear: confront the consequences or risk alienating both the public and his political allies further.

Gachagua’s fate

Gachagua now faces a critical moment before the Senate, which will either solidify his removal or offer him a chance to remain in office. The Senate has decided to hear the impeachment motion in a full plenary session, allowing all 47 Senators to weigh in.

This decision followed a heated debate led by Senate Minority Leader Edwin Sifuna, who opposed handling the matter through a committee. During the session, Senator Enoch Wambua was ejected after challenging Speaker Amason Kingi.

The impeachment motion is set to take place on Wednesday and Thursday next week, with Gachagua and the National Assembly required to file responses and supporting documents by Monday, October 14. The Senate has agreed to extend its sittings regarding Gachagua’s impeachment trial to Friday, October 18, as necessary.

As part of his defense, Gachagua has presented a will belonging to his late brother as evidence against the Ksh5.2 billion corruption charges.
