Nelly the Goon, a member of Ochungulo’s family, claims that the Kenyan Gengetone’s demise can be attributed to the absence of a mentor who acts as a leader and provide direction for the musicians.

Ochungulo asserted in an interview that in order for artists to survive and thrive, they must follow the lead of someone who is succeeding and carry out instructions exactly as they are told.

According to him, the only way for artists to be recognized and appreciated all over the world is for them to be distinctive and accomplish something that nobody else is doing. He feels that Gengetone music has collapsed because they lack a mentor who can guide them on what to do and for the mentors that are available aren’t supporting the artists.

He also talked about the ones who were campaigning against Gengetone in Kenya, saying that the likes of Jalang’o are the ones who destroyed Gengetone with their corrupt information to the public.

“But unacheki hawa wasee wabig ndio wanafaa kua mamentor lakini wao ndio walidestroy culture… Unajua hizi vitu ndogo ndogo zinamatter sana.

Each time I see anatokea mbele ya watu na ako na a lot of influential people, that’s a big L kwao.”

As per Ochungulo, despite the Kenyan Genge artists working day and night to release music, it wouldn’t matter or count because the public had been fed misguided information that Gengetone wasn’t good. He blames the mentors, who were supposed to be role models, for breaking Gengetone.
