The City Governor has waived all the medical fees for the victims that were affected by the fire and assured the public that the County Government is working tirelessly to see that all those affected by the fire are compensated and taken care of.

“The Nairobi City County Government stands in prayer with our sisters and brothers in Embakasi sub-county, who last night were gravely affected by a devastating fire incident.”.

“May the Almighty rest in peace the souls of those who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident.” Sakaja said

In his brief speech to the public and the residents who were present at the scene, he said that over 200 victims have been admitted with serious injuries and are being looked at, as well as an additional three fatalities that were recorded.

According to the information shared by the government’s spokesman, Isaac Mwaura, a truck carrying gas cylinders exploded yesterday at around 11:30 p.m., just within the market, igniting a huge ball of fire.

The fire went on to bring down a godown that was nearby, which deals with garments and textiles. The inferno damaged several vehicles and commercial properties, including many small and medium-sized businesses.

Mwaura reported that 222 Kenyans were injured by the fire and have been rushed to various hospitals.

Some 21 survivors are at the Kenyatta National Hospital, 160 at Mama Lucy General Hospital, 19 at Mbagathi Hospital, 14 at the Modern Komarock Hospital, and eight at Nairobi West Hospital.

Kenyans have taken it to Twitter (X) to share their opinions over the same:

Kijana ya Baba: The exploded LPG gas station behind the skyline in Embakasi, next to JKIA, was declared illegal, but because of corruption in Kenya, they allowed it to operate illegally.

System ni ya majambaz

Boss Yator: On the Embakasi Gas Plant fire incident, I personally called NEMA several times to ask them two questions.

1. Why was there a gas handling factory operating next to a residential area?

2. How did the company get a permit to operate next to a residential area given the hazards it poses?

This was next to my place in Nyayo, and let me tell you, I just woke up to realize I escaped death last night, but unfortunately, my friend Allan didn’t. I remember one evening we were watching with him Herman Manyora’s daily clips explaining how Ruto will not become president. That night we had a very long conversation with him on the danger that this gas plant posed to the community, and eventually I told him I’m moving out.

You can imagine the last two months I lived in that house; I didn’t step into my balcony or even open the windows of my house, et cetera. I couldn’t handle the smell of the gas any more.

NG’ENDO MURUGU: This Embakasi gas filling plant that has left 3 people dead and more than 300 hospitalized was declared illegal a couple of years ago during President Uhuru’s tenure, but corrupt officers allowed it to thrive.

The former Nairobi County Planning Team, led by the CECM, should be arrested and charged. How on earth did they approve the establishment of such a high-risk plant within a residential area?

My heart goes out to the affected families and friends.🙏

Anybody involved in corruption like this one should just receive the death penalty!
